Mobile vibrates
- "I am coming to Cairo, I want to meet you" Dr Lel texted.
"Where do you want to meet?" Another text followed rapidly.
- " It depends, What do you feel like doing?" Mr. S replied
- " I don't know, I am bored and sad and I just want do something new?" Dr L Replied
- "Have you had lunch?" Mr. S asked
" Meet you after 2 hours in Nasr City" He continued without giving her space to say no or yes *Assuming her answer*
- "Ok" she texted shortly.
3 hours later at Nasr City, Abbas el Akkad
- "Where are you?" Mr. S exclaimed while on the phone with Dr L.
- "The grey car in front of you" She replied
Mr. S walks in a steady pace to a gray new model car parked on the side of the road. He confidently opens the front door and sits in the passenger seat, looks on his side to see her face for the first time ever.
- "Hi, How was your trip here?" He asked in a calm, friendly manner, not the least signs of surprise or even impression on his face
- "Fine, I am surprised you agreed to meet. You never even asked to see my photo!" she said in surprised voice.
Mr. S gets comfortable in his chair, looks to her in the eyes " Why do I need to ask to see your photo?" he asked calmly
"Why would I ask for your photograph?" S replied. "I was going to meet you anyway. Seeing you in person seemed far more interesting."
"You’re strange," she said, smiling. "Can you drive? I’m sick of driving."
"You haven’t seen anything yet," he replied.
- "Okay, just tell me how to go" she replied with an excited smile.
- "You don't look like an L btw" Mr Stranger commented with a confident smile " But I will figure out your real name through the night" he continued in a confident calm tone.
After finishing their meal in that restaurant
- "So, you said you want something out of the routine ... let's do something stupid" Mr. S suggested
- "I want to smoke shesha" Dr L replied hesitantly.
- "Luck you, I know some places" he replied fast not giving her a chance to take back her answer
- "But you really have to drive, I won that game" she insisted referring to a game they played during the meal.
Mr. S couldn't help but approve, he took the keys and got in the driver's seat.
- "So your real name is?" Mr. S asked confidently while he smiles and turns the engine on
- " S******" she replied with a warm smile
- " Yes, you definitely are a S****** , no other name could look like you like this one" He nodded and smiled while driving out the parking spot to that roof top cafe.
It 's a charming roof top, a beautiful view, friendly staff, and most importantly and 10 floors elevator to the top.
- " You know how many girls have I kissed in this particular elevator?" Mr. S asked while they are both alone in the elevator up the way to the roof.
- " You are not increasing the no. by one tonight" Dr L replies with a shy smile and almost no eye contact.
- " Maybe" Mr. S replies confidently
The get to the roof top cafe, Mr. S moves to his favorite table in that narrow corner and pulls out the chair for the Dr L, sits comfortably leaning his back backwards and orders his coffee and her shesha, getting ready to dig her mind and explore the possibilities .... He started.
"I have a rather unpleasant habit," S said, watching the smoke dissolve into the night.
"Which is?" Dr. Lel asked.
"I like wandering through people’s minds. Finding the doors they keep locked."
"And you think mine has locked doors?"
"Everyone does. Yours just seem particularly interesting."
She smiled faintly. "You’re very confident for someone who barely knows me."
"Confidence has never required much evidence."
After an hour of a conversation and mind games
Dr. Lel told him about the person she had loved: someone who had used her and hurt her, physically and psychologically, and whom she still struggled to forget. She spoke about the doubts she carried, her uncertain future, and her restless search for an escape from a life she no longer enjoyed.
S listened without interrupting. He could recognize the loneliness in her words, perhaps because he had spent enough time disguising his own. Yet there was something intoxicating about being trusted so quickly.
- "So give that I won 2 times in our games ... I get to have 2 requests ... like you did with me driving" Mr. S said in a calm smiley tone
- "So what do you want?" Dr L asks in an anxious matter
- "Nothing right now" he replied quickly "I will tell you when I feel like it, don't worry ... I never leave my victories without redemption" he continued with a smile
- "Ok, let's just pay and leave then" she suggested.
Mr. Stranger asks for payment, pays and they head to the rest rooms as they are leaving, meeting in front of the elevator, they get in and they start the journey down.
The elevator doors closed. S turned toward Dr. Lel, remembering his earlier joke.
"Remember what I told you about this elevator?"
"Unfortunately," she replied, fighting a smile.
He stepped closer. For a brief moment, their eyes met, and he waited. She closed the distance herself.
S wrapped an arm around her waist and kissed her, slowly at first, then with the growing urgency of two people who had spent the evening pretending the attraction wasn’t there.
The elevator chimed. Neither moved immediately.
"That’s one request," he whispered.
"You’re insufferable," she said, smiling.
"And yet..."
Looking at the doors as they open they got their looks straight and walked out to the car.
Sitting in the car Mr. S holds Dr. L hand and rubs it smoothly.
- "You are not as bad as you think" He said decisively, she only replied with a smile
"It’s almost two in the morning," S said. "You’re exhausted, you’re far from home, and you still have a long drive ahead."
"I can manage."
"I’m sure you can. But I still have one request left."
She turned toward him. "You’re not serious."
"Completely. Stay the night."
She raised an eyebrow.
"At a hotel," he added. "You get your own room. You sleep. Tomorrow, you drive home without falling asleep behind the wheel."
"And that’s your grand second request?"
"Disappointed?"
"A little."
S smiled. "Then perhaps the night isn’t over yet."
Mr. Stranger gets out his phone and starts to make phone calls for hotels till he finally finds an hotel with available rooms, the drive to there and book their rooms.
At the lobby of a the hotel
Dr Lely waited on the side of the lobby as Mr. S was making the reservation. two separate rooms, each for one of them. they finished, signed and paid.
- " Sir, we just have one concern that there is no visits except in the lobby" the front desk agent said in a firm tone.
- " Don't worry, me and the Dr are too tired to what you think of, we just are resting to the morning, get our car fixed and will be on our way" Mr. S replied with a smile.
Mr. S noticed that they put her room a floor higher than his, also the lobby boy who carried their bags went to his room first, left him there and helped her on the upper floor.
Before he started to get too comfortable, the room phone rings.
- "Sir, We forgot to mention that room visits are prohibited and the floors are camera watched" a voice mentioned
- "Worry not, I just want to sleep. Can you please leave me now to my sleepy desires?" Mr. S replied sarcastly
- " Sorry for inconvenience sir" the voice replied.
A minute later his phone rings, it was her, in a worried voice.
- " S, someone called and said rooms visits are prohibited ..." Mr. S interrupts her to say.
- " They called me to say the same at the exact same moment. Don't worry they are just checking if we are each in our own room at the same time ... all will be sleeping soon anyway don't worry. let's just take a shower and then we see" He explained calmly.
45 mins later after both showered and felt comfortable
- " I am getting sleepy" Dr L said with a sleepy voice on the phone.
"No, you can come to me now," S said, hearing the sleepiness in her voice and fearing the moment might pass. "But use the stairs on the right of your room."
He had already worked out where the stairwell opened on both floors, partly to avoid another lecture from the hotel staff.
Ten minutes later, a gentle knock interrupted the silence. S opened the door.
She stood before him, her hair still slightly damp, wearing an expression that balanced hesitation with unmistakable curiosity.
"You look pleased with yourself," she whispered.
"You came."
"I haven’t decided whether that was a good idea."
"Then come in and decide."
She stepped inside. The door closed behind her, leaving the hotel’s warnings somewhere on the other side.
For a moment, neither spoke. S moved closer, his eyes searching hers. She smiled, reached for his shirt and pulled him toward her.
Their kiss carried none of the elevator’s restraint.
The teasing conversations, the stolen glances, the tension that had followed them through Cairo — everything seemed to have been leading toward this moment.
Her perfume lingered in the narrow space between them. S brushed a strand of hair away from her face, and she answered with another kiss.
Time began to lose its familiar shape.
There were whispered words, occasional laughter, and moments of silence that neither felt compelled to interrupt.
Beneath Dr. Lel’s confidence, S occasionally glimpsed the weary woman who had spoken to him on the rooftop. Yet tonight, she seemed determined to forget everything beyond that room.
And S, who had spent the evening trying to understand her, found himself content, for once, simply to be there.
When the first hint of morning appeared beyond the curtains, neither was ready for the night to end.
It was 6:08 a.m. on the clock beside the bed. They reluctantly parted so she could return to her own room before the hotel stirred.
They wake up 2 hours after, check out and leave.
Driving her to the nearest spot that they can both start a normal day without each other ...
"That was a perfect night," Dr. Lel said, smiling. "Thank you. I needed it more than you know."
"You have no idea how much I needed it too," S replied.
"Do you think I should stay another day?"
S looked at her and smiled. "No. There are still days to come."
She nodded, leaned toward him and kissed him goodbye.
He watched her drive away, disappearing into the morning traffic.
Only yesterday, she had been a stranger behind a phone screen. Now he knew her laughter, her perfume, the sadness beneath her confidence, and the way she looked at him when she thought he wasn’t paying attention.
Yet knowing those things did not mean he truly knew her. Perhaps that was what fascinated him most.
Some strangers were never meant to be entirely understood.
